What is a dyslexia assessment?
A dyslexia assessment is made up of a variety of tests that look at how someone learns and retains information (which they see or hear).

It highlights strengths, includes background information of previous schooling, and is a useful tool that looks at whether someone learns differently from mainstream learners.
Why do I need one?
You should consider having an assessment for the following reasons:

  • It can allow you to have exam concessions – (having extra time, using a reader or a scribe if you require one)
  • At higher education you must have a DSA assessment to get Reasonable Adjustments and support whilst at University.
  • As an adult – finding out why learning has always been difficult when others found it easier.
  • As an adult – Reasonable Adjustments in the workplace, which might include text to speech software, extra time to complete reports,                notes in advance for training courses.
Do I need to prepare for the assessment?
No. All you need to do is complete our initial registration form and provide information on your previous schooling and challenges.

Apart from that this isn't a test you can study for!
What happens during an assessment?
During the assessment you will be asked a series of questions about schooling and early challenges in life. There will be some reading and spelling exercises as well as tests on your visual memory and  auditory memory.  In addition you will need to complete a short piece of writing.
How long does it take?
A dyslexia assessment can take up to three hours for an adult and two hours for a child.
Where can I take the assessment?
Assessments are mainly undertaken at ALS near Exeter or at educational establishments near you.
On occasions they are done in a place of work.
What can these assessments be used for?
There are many ways to use the assessments as explained in the FAQ "Why do I need one?".  As a parent, you may want to inform a teacher or SENCO of your childs learning needs and style. It can be used to understand you as a learner.  You can use it for exam concessions or to receive Reasonable Adjustments at your workplace.
