Frequently Asked Questions

+ What is a dyslexia assessment and why would I need one?

A dyslexia assessment is made up of a variety of tests that look at how someone learns and retains information (which they see or hear). It highlights strengths, includes background information of previous schooling, and is a useful tool that looks at whether someone learns differently from mainstream learners.

You should consider having an assessment for the following reasons:

  • It can allow you to have exam concessions – (having extra time, using a reader or a scribe if you require one).
  • At higher education you must have a DSA assessment to get Reasonable Adjustments and support whilst at University.
  • As an adult – finding out why learning has always been difficult or a challenge.
  • As an adult – Reasonable Adjustments in the workplace, which might include text to speech software, extra time to complete reports, notes in advance for training courses.
+ Do I need to prepare for the assessment?

All you need to do is complete our initial registration form and provide information on your previous schooling and challenges.

Apart from that this isn't a test you can study for!

+ What happens during an assessment?

During the assessment you will be asked a series of questions about schooling and early challenges in life. There will be some reading and spelling exercises as well as tests on your visual memory and auditory memory. In addition you will need to complete a short piece of writing.

+ How long does it take?

A dyslexia assessment can take up to three hours for an adult and two hours for a child.

+ Where can I take the assessment?

Assessments are mainly undertaken at ALS near Exeter or at educational establishments near you. We can also carry out assessments in a quiet space at your workplace.

+ What can these assessments be used for?
  • To inform a manager through the eyes of the employee of the support they can give to retain staff and harmony in the workplace
  • To inform the dyslexic employee of the Access to Work scheme and the support that is available
  • Enable Exam Access Arrangements for exams (i.e. GCSE's etc) for extra time, a reader or scribe
  • For DSA assessments, a student may be granted 1-2-1 support in higher education, technology to support reading and writing skills, and note-taking software, etc.
  • Recommendations to parents for supporting their child at home
  • Supporting the classroom teacher with ‘realistic’ recommendations for supporting their students
